FORT BRAGG, N.C. — A paratrooper with the 82nd Airborne Division was killed when his guard position was struck by a rocket-propelled grenade near Baghdad, the military said July 30.
Pfc. Cody C. Grater, 20, of Spring Hill, Fla., was killed July 29, the 82nd Airborne said. He was a vehicle driver with the 407th Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Brigade Combat Team.
“Our son died doing what he was proud of,” said Grater’s mother, Anita D. Lewis, and stepfather, Larry L. Decker, in a statement. “It was his goal to make the Army his career, which he loved. He was proud of serving his country.”

Yesterday I was with my 20 month old granddaughter, Kaylie, and she was looking at the charm of you on my bracelet that I wear every day. I was telling her who you were and that he wanted to meet you but didn't get the chance to. I asked her to give you a kiss. She picked up the charm and gave you a huge kiss (MuWah) then unexpectically she took the charm and put it to her heart without me telling her to do so and she had a precious little smile on her face. I had tears in my eyes! It was so touching to see her do that. You must of been whispering in her ear to let me know that you are looking after us. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. I Love You and so does baby Kaylie!

Dear Sweet Cody,
Today my mom and I went to church for a memorial mass for loved ones that have passed away. My mom brought a picture of my grandparents, and mass cards for my aunt and uncles. Of course, I brought a patriotic wreath that I had made with your picture on it with words on it saying "OUR HERO". I have it hanging on our front door because Bobby and I are so proud of you and want everyone to know it. The mass was beautiful and the priest talked about heaven and told us that there isn't any pain, anger, lonliness or any kind of unhappiness there - only love, laughter and comfort. During the mass a man read a beautiful poem and it reminded me of something that you would of told everyone who loved and cared about you. After mass was over I went to get your picture and a man came over and told me that he goes to your grave every Sunday and will continue, to do so, until he dies or moves out of Florida. He never met you but he appreciated your patriotism and the sacrifice you made for us. What a kindhearted man and I was so touched. Several other people recognized your picture and also had kind words to say. You made such a wonderful impact on our community. After mass we went to the church hall for lunch and to reminisce about our loved ones. Thank you for the wonderful memories, I will treasure them always. I miss you very much. On Sunday, Bobby, Brian, Nane and Me (Kim) went to visit you. The sprinklers were on and they kept going over your grave. We all said it was you playing with us because the water kept spraying around your site longer and faster than any other place. We were all wet by the time we left. I'm sure you had a great laugh watching us jump around trying not to get wet - you sure do have a good sense of humor. It was emotional for me knowing that I will never see you your smiling face again. Bobby inducted you into his firefighter organization called Fraternal Order of Firefighter Society - also know as the (Fools) remember you came to a few of our parties. We all stood around and said a prayer for you and hope that you are resting in peace. I also went to see your sister and stepdad and gave them the coin that they all carry with them at all times and told them that they only accept firefighters but Bobby wanted to include you and and everyone voted and it was unanimious. You will be on their active list and your name will be called out at roll call. I also told them that they only accept people who have the mentality to go the extra mile who would help another brother even if they would be killed themselves while fighting a fire or in your case war. It's Bobby's way of saying thanks from one brother to another. I only wish you were here to receive it yourself. Not a day goes by that I don't think of you. Love, Kim

As I drove North along the route to find an appropriate spot to stand, I was amazed at the number of participants. I am happy to say that I had to drive almost 6 miles to find a spot that looked "vacant enough" for me to fill, as it was my desire to make sure that at no point along the journey, would the family not see someone standing there for him, the way he stood for us.
I know I was thinking of how he spent his time standing in the sunshine for me, in 65 pounds of gear, with no relief in sight, wondering if at any minute he would be fired upon.
I kept thinking that I had the solace of knowing that in about an hour, I could go home to my house, jump in my pool and change out of my sweaty shorts and t-shirt.
Cody wasn't able to do that and although he did come home, he didn't enjoy the pool, or the air conditioning or the cold Diet Coke. He didn't get to see his family or his dogs. He didn't get to speak to his friends on the cell phone about Friday night's football game.
When I finally got in the house after my dip in the cool waters of the luscious blue pool, my 3-year old daughter was wondering why I still had tears in my eyes almost 2 hours after the procession past me.
The biggest part of all, is that she WILL understand why and I will never forget.
