Profile

NEW YORK -- Peter Jennings, the broadcaster who delivered the news to Americans each night in five separate decades, has died. He was 67.

Jennings, who announced in April that he had lung cancer, died at his New York home, ABC News President David Westin said late Sunday.

With Tom Brokaw and Dan Rather, Jennings was part of a triumvirate that dominated network news for more than two decades. His smooth delivery and years of international reporting experience made Jennings particularly popular among urban dwellers.

Jennings was the face of ABC News whenever a big story broke. He logged more than 60 hours on the air during the week of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, offering a soothing sense of continuity during a troubled time.

Peter Jennings honesty, respect and demeanor provided news coverage to us that didn't smack of "self importance" like that of the 2 opposing news commentators. He seemed to care that he was reporting accurately and not just there to promote himself or hear the sound of his own voice. We were blessed to have had him provide coverage and will sorely miss him.

GOD gave me eyes that I might see
The work that could be done by me.
He gave me ears that I might hear
The cry of those who need me near.
He gave me lips that I might speak
comfort and peace to some who seek.
He gave me a mind that I might know
How to help those who need me so.
He gave me hands that I might do
Some large or simple task for you.
He gave me a prayer that I might pray
Thy help and guidance every day.
And this one thing all else above
GOD gave me a heart that I might love.

This is a poem by James Whitcomb Riley that got me through my own dear father's death and I hope it means as much to others as it does to me.
"I cannot say,and I will not say That he is dead - He is just away! With a cheery smile and a wave of his hand, He has wandered into an unknown land. And he left us dreaming how very fair It needs must be, since he lingers there. And you - O you, who the wildest yearn For the old-time step and the glad return. Think of him fairing on, as dear In the love of There as the love of Here; Think of him still as the same, I say; He is not dead - He is just away !!"

Simple words to get you through! Heed them well as they are true! He waits for us all and will greet us there, across the Rainbow Bridge that we all will share! (MM-2005)

I feel deeply for this loss. I am 39 yr. old and "grew up" with him. I, too, smoked for many years until 5 years ago when I became pregnant with my first child. As many times as I had tried before to quit, it was not about me anymore. Now, I have two little girls. I am responsible for them. I still do not smoke. However, not a month has gone by that I don't think about smoking or try to rationalize a "sneak". Mr. Jennings-among many other lessons-has shown me not to fall back onto the smoking crutch. Even if I didn't get "caught in the act", I'd still be hurting my family just as much if not more than myself.
I'm glad Mr. Jennings is without pain now and is receivng the respect and accolades he deserves.
God Bless you and give you strength.

A very painful loss for many American families. He was a source to the world,to the news.He Reported, and anchored(& he was literally an anchor for all of us in the most uncertain & terrifying times in our lives) with a wealth of knowledge and personal experience that came across with such a real & sincere respect and responsiblity to all of us .Nothing better illustrates this mentally ,then during 9/11.In my living room was my famiily & Peter bringing us the details & with an amzing sense of duty to comfort every American ,in a way no other could.Sincerely it is such a loss of comfort & security knowing we/I will not be able to turn to Peter again in the so many times we did,to get "the real news" without all the sensationalism that so prevalis across other endless channels.I must commend the awesome 2 hour reprt on Peter that ABC did.I knew he was special but after seeing that I was inspired & in awe of what a real & special man he was.My condolences go out to his family & to his public whom obviously feels the great loss of a real special personal whom will stand as one of the best of us .Peace & blessings To you Peter Jennings

On Aug. 13, 2004 I had a heart attack, Aug. 14th my Dad died from cancer, Sept. 9th my Mom died, Oct. 1st my cat died, Aug. 1, 2005 my new cat died from leukemia. Then, Aug. 8th my friend, Peter Jennings, died. No, he never new my name nor did he ever give me a call and we never had lunch together but, every night he engulfed my living room with his smile, his tears, and his love for people, animals, and countries. His love for his job made me love what he talked about and also love the places he reported about. Never has there been such a man to sit at an anchor desk. I mourn with the world over this great loss. Mr. Jennings has been added to my list of significant losses in my life.

May God fill the losses in our lives with more of His love.

Thank you for allowing me to express thoughts today.

Peter Jennings has been on my mind latley. I find myself crying sometimes when i watch interviews about this amazing journalist who brought us the world news nightly. He was so dedicated to his work and did it extremely well. I remeber watching him report on 9/11 and how he showed us that he too was human by trying to hold up at best, but even then breaking down into tears at times. Even though, he still sat there behind his desk and reported on this horrific tradegy and brought us all the up to date news as we watched unable to pry ourselves from the television. He was the guru of television news and will be greatly missed. My deepest condolences to his family at this time. He will be greatly missed and always remembered.

Peter,
I will always be enormously grateful to you for the many times you informed me, an educator, as only an educator could. How inspiring you have been and will continue to be throughout the remainder of my life. You made this crazy, complicated world easier for me to understand-and accept. More importantly for me, however, was how your presence in my living room every weekday evening between 6:30 and 7:00 and during various crises and newsworthy events provided me with much needed comfort and reasurance. I will never forget the wisdom, encouragement, and courage you demonstrated back in the 80s when you did a special about HIV/AIDS on PBS. I had recently been diagnosed with the HIV not long before this ground-breaking special. You were a pioneer among journalists back then with regad to this disease. I gained much strength from you and realize that my current good health is, to a significant degree, due to your compassion and research about HIV. Also, on a much lighter note, thank you so much for bringing the world together as countries and regions celebrated the new millenium. I'll miss your intelligence, your polish, courteousness, compassion, wit, and cool. Rest in peace, Peter.

Rest in piece, Peter.

I also want to thank you for helping me get done smoking cigarettes.

When Peter announced that he had lung cancer, for some reason his news resonated deeper in me than any other celebrity with lung cancer. I respect Peter and was truly moved by his story and confession about relapsing in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

I smoked my last cigarette on the Friday before Mamorial Day, this year. I have not smoked a single puff since.

The news of Peter's death has, understandably, hit me pretty hard, since I thought of Peter as my inspiration for quitting. I think the best thing I can do now for his memory is to stay smoke free for the rest of my life.

I no longer smoke and I have Peter to at least partially thank. I thought that smart people could avoid lung cancer by being smarter than it, or something. Obviously that is not the case.

Rest in peace, Peter. Bless your soul. Thank you.

-Paul

my thoughts and prayers go out to peterjennings family. i am never one to watch the news every night. but, when i do, it was abc and peter jennings. i was watching the night peter announced he had lung cancer. it was like losing someone that you depended on to be there for you every night. but, i thought he would be back in a few months. i would watch almost every night, hoping to see his kind and caring face. but then came the sad news today. he was a great journalist and he will be greatly missed. may God speed.

Peter Jennings was one of the most engaging and charismatic news men ever. The first time I saw him I was totally enthralled with his voice and demeaner. I want to thank his family for this opportunity for giving him to us also. I know he loved what he did just by the look on his face. Please pass on my condolences to all who loved him. Now you can all know how widely loved your special man was.

To the Jennings family: Peter Jennings was a great journalist who will be missed as network news enters an age where opinion sometimes counts more then fact. I will miss the international bent that he brought to network news. His passing marks the end of a great age in news broadcasting.

I and my family will miss your clever and informative broadcasts.
In Judaism when a patriach dies, the proper expression is "May your family be comforted amongst the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem".

God speed Peter.
I hope that in their time of loss and sorrow, Peter's family may find some help in knowing how many people were touched by his warmth and personality.
My mind returns to September 11, 2001 and the calming cadence of his broadcast that day and evening. There was something about his delivery that horrible day that was reassuring that, yes, the sun would come up the next morning and live would go on...somehow.
Peter, may your family find strength in your strength and those whom you have touched throughout the years.
God speed my friend.

Peter, we are going to miss the best news anchor in the world.
I started watching you when I was 10 years old.
Your memory live in us as the best.
Not one of the best, just the best.

Mr. Jennings, was truly an American at heart. I listened only to Mr. Jennings because my children could listen to it with me and understand, yet not be afraid, or terrified. His voice was calming even then. My son at age 9 years old, told me that he wanted to be a news anchorman, like PETER JENNINGS. I was at awe that Mr. Jennings had made an impression of such magnitude on my 9 year old sports driven son. I never imagined that my children truly listened to the news. But true to form, Mr. Jennings once again came through with such grace and compassion. The world has suffered a loss that can never be replaced, especially for our future children who will live in these uncertain times. God Bless you Mr. Jennings and to his family, they are in my prayers.

It’s God’s Will And We Must Comply
By: Charles G. Turner,

Life is uncertain,
But as sure as we are born one day we must die
Sometimes we sit and wonder why
The fact is it’s God’s will and we must comply.

Throughout our life we live we live through happiness and sadness
And many toils and strife
And when our earthly life is over we enter into our “eternal life”

Whenever a loved one or friend makes their earthly depart
It is natural for it to bring hurt and sorrow to our heart
And to deal with our loss we grieve, mourn, and cry
In all essence we must remember this is God’s will and we must all must comply

For those of us that are left behind
We must cherish the special memories
And keep them all in mind
Just remember it is not for us to question why we have to die
It’s God’s will and we all have to comply

May God Bless and comfort all of you

My condolences goes out to the Jennings' family. He will be great missed. He was also a great man who in the past recieved his GED and was proud that he did.

As a GED teacher, he was the inspiration to my students. This created a great longing for those to get their GED and make something of themselves.

As a I said, my condolences goes out to his family. His was a great man.
